WELCOME TO THE ROYAL SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY OF ARTS

From its inception in 1856 the Society has been at the forefront of visual art progress. Its members have made a comprehensive impact on the advancement of art in Australia. The influence of our artists on the international environment has been significant, and we are proud of the respect and renown earned by our members now and in the past.

The Ashtons, the Heysens, Ruth Tuck and Mervyn Smith, John Dowie and Dorrit Black all added lustre to the Society by their outstanding work.

Current Fellows including Jeffrey Smart, Penny Dowie, Robert Hannaford, David Dridan, Cathi Steer and numerous others - have won glowing reputations.

The Society provides an ideal location for exhibitions of members' works, and of national and international showings. The Doug Moran National Portrait Prize has been hosted here since its introduction, the inaugural prize being awarded to Penny Dowie. Innovative demonstrations enable the public to experience the actual process of portrait painting.

A participant in festival and fringe functions, the Society is active in initiating and supporting other group activities including overseas exhibitions.

"Youthscape" is an outstanding opportunity for young emerging artists to enter their work in this competition with substantial prizes as incentives for their work.

Always looking to the future, the Society advances art and the artists of South Australia through cooperative effort and innovative action, so extending appreciation of the benefits of art to the community.
